Gabriela Meunié is a French-American artist born in Mallorca whose practice is rooted in the traditions of abstraction and gestural painting. Growing up on the Mediterranean island during a period marked by a vibrant abstract art scene, she developed an early connection to the expressive possibilities of colour, material, and movement.
Although her background includes academic training, Meunié has always felt closely aligned with the legacy of Abstract Expressionism. Her work prioritises process over theory, embracing spontaneity, intuition, and direct engagement with the medium. Rather than working from predetermined structures, she allows each painting to evolve organically through a dialogue between gesture, material, and surface.
A distinctive aspect of her practice is the creation of her own colours using pure pigments, acrylic binders, and acrylic paints. This careful preparation gives her works a unique material richness and depth. Through an interplay of opacity and transparency, density and fluidity, stains, splashes, and layered brushstrokes, Meunié constructs compositions that feel both powerful and intimate.
Her paintings emerge through successive layers, gradually building complex surfaces that retain traces of their making. The physicality of the process remains visible, transforming each work into a record of energy, movement, and time. While a painting may eventually reach completion, it remains open in meaning, continuing to reveal new relationships and interpretations through the viewer’s experience.
Balancing instinct with control, Meunié creates abstract works that invite contemplation while celebrating the expressive potential of paint itself.
