Arran Rahimian’s artistic practice combines intuitive mark-making with the construction of considered forms, drawing inspiration from the textures, patterns, and transformations found in the natural world. His influences range from worn book covers and shifting light to the traces left by human interaction with surfaces. Treating canvas and linen as dynamic spaces, Rahimian approaches painting as a visual record of movement, time, and experience. In some works, he deliberately invites viewers to walk across the canvas, allowing physical traces, wear, and marks to accumulate as evidence of passing time and human presence.
Rahimian is particularly interested in capturing fleeting moments between stillness and movement. Primitive gestural sketches and instinctive brushstrokes often serve as a starting point, with their raw energy, colour, and spontaneity informing the development of larger-scale paintings. Through processes of layering, concealing, and revealing, he explores the relationship between memory, surface, and transformation.
Working through an open and experimental process, Rahimian allows each work to evolve organically, balancing intention with chance. Layers of texture and gesture emerge through repeated interaction with the surface, creating compositions that convey both tranquillity and vitality. The resulting works invite viewers to consider the subtle traces of time, memory, and human interaction embedded within the painted surface.
