    Eric Stefanski
    Biography

Eric Stefanski (b. 1987) is a Chicago-based artist whose work explores the intersections of humour, failure, sincerity, and self-reflection. Drawing from personal experience as well as broader cultural and historical references, he creates large-scale abstract paintings that combine expressive mark-making with handwritten text, transforming the canvas into a space for both visual and emotional inquiry.

Stefanski studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and received his MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. His practice is rooted in an ongoing examination of what it means to be an artist, embracing uncertainty, vulnerability, and contradiction as essential aspects of the creative process.

Text plays a central role in his work. Often direct, humorous, self-deprecating, or unexpectedly poignant, his written phrases function as fragments of internal dialogue, inviting viewers into moments of doubt, longing, reflection, and connection. These personal observations resonate beyond autobiography, touching on universal experiences and emotions that feel both intimate and familiar.

Alongside these textual elements, Stefanski employs energetic gestures, layered surfaces, and abstract forms that reflect the complexity of contemporary life. His paintings balance playfulness with introspection, creating a visual language that is simultaneously accessible and deeply nuanced.

Through his work, Stefanski examines the pressures, aspirations, and absurdities of modern existence while questioning traditional ideas about success, identity, and artistic value. The result is a body of work that is emotionally honest, intellectually engaging, and often disarmingly human—inviting viewers to find meaning in imperfection, humour, and shared experience.
